Festive, buttery advent calendar cookies perfect for decorating and packaging into a DIY countdown for the holiday season.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Royal icing or glaze, for decorating
  • Food coloring and sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract; mix until smooth.
  3. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until a dough forms.
  5. Divide dough into two portions, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  6. Roll out chilled dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into 1–2 inch festive shapes.
  7. Place cookies on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes, until edges are lightly golden.
  8. Cool completely before decorating with royal icing, sprinkles, or edible markers.

  • Use lemon or orange zest for a citrus twist.
  • Replace some flour with cocoa powder for chocolate cookies.
