These baked apples are a warm, spiced dessert filled with a cozy mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon, nuts, and dried fruit. Easy to prepare and bursting with fall flavor, they’re perfect for dessert, brunch, or holiday tables.

Ingredients

  • 4 apples (Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 1/4 cup raisins or dried cranberries
  • 2 tbsp butter, cut into 4 pieces
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup water or apple cider

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Core apples, leaving the bottom intact. Use a small spoon or paring knife to remove seeds and create a hollow center.
  3. In a bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, nuts, and raisins.
  4. Stuff the filling tightly into the hollow center of each apple.
  5. Place apples in a baking dish and pour water or apple cider into the bottom of the dish.
  6. Top each apple with a piece of butter and drizzle with vanilla extract.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 10–15 minutes, until apples are soft and bubbling.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Add oats to the filling for an apple crisp variation.
  • Use maple syrup instead of brown sugar for deeper flavor.
  • Add a splash of bourbon or spiced rum for a boozy twist.
  • Omit nuts or use seeds for a nut-free version.
  • Top with yogurt, whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream for serving.
