A stunning and indulgent dessert made with layers of chocolate cake, cherry filling, chocolate pudding, and whipped cream. Black Forest trifle is a crowd-pleasing treat that combines elegance and ease, perfect for holidays or celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 1 chocolate cake (homemade or store-bought), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 can (21 oz) cherry pie filling or 2 cups pitted cherries in syrup
  • 2 cups whipped cream or whipped topping
  • 2 cups chocolate pudding or custard
  • 1/4 cup Kirsch or cherry juice (optional)
  • Chocolate shavings or curls (for garnish)
  • Fresh cherries (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Cut the chocolate cake into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Place a layer of cake cubes in the bottom of a trifle dish or large glass bowl.
  3. Drizzle with a little Kirsch or cherry juice if using.
  4. Spoon a layer of chocolate pudding over the cake.
  5. Add a generous layer of cherry filling or cherries in syrup.
  6. Spread a layer of whipped cream on top of the cherries.
  7. Repeat the layers — cake, pudding, cherries, cream — until you reach the top of the dish.
  8. Finish with a final layer of whipped cream, topped with chocolate shavings and fresh cherries.
  9. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to let flavors meld.

Notes

  • Use brownies instead of cake for a richer dessert.
  • Vanilla or white chocolate pudding can replace chocolate for a lighter variation.
  • Layer in chocolate mousse for an extra luxurious version.
  • Sprinkle dark chocolate and powdered sugar on top for a festive look.
  • Best made a day ahead — the flavors improve overnight.
