Cheese and Egg Rolls are an easy, comforting savory treat perfect for any time of day. Soft and flavorful, these rolls are filled with melted cheese and a light egg layer, making them ideal for breakfast, brunch, or a snack. Customizable with herbs, vegetables, or different cheeses, they’re a crowd-pleaser that’s simple to make and enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 2 large eggs (one for filling, one for brushing)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Optional: chopped fresh herbs like parsley or chives

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease or line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the milk, one beaten egg, and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll out into a rectangle about ½ inch thick.
  5. Spread the shredded cheese evenly over the dough. If using herbs, sprinkle them on top.
  6. In a skillet, lightly scramble the remaining egg and spread it evenly over the cheese layer.
  7. Roll the dough tightly from one side to the other, sealing the edges.
  8. Slice the roll into 1 to 1½ inch thick pieces and place them cut-side down on the baking sheet.
  9. Brush the tops of the rolls with the remaining beaten egg for a golden finish.
  10. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.

Notes

  • Add sautéed vegetables like spinach or mushrooms to the filling for extra flavor.
  • Try different cheeses like feta, goat cheese, or gouda.
  • For a spicy twist, sprinkle in some chili flakes or cayenne pepper.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave before serving.
  • Freeze unbaked rolls on a tray, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, adding extra baking time.
  • Use dairy-free milk and cheese alternatives to make dairy-free versions.
  • Swap cheese and egg for sweet fillings like cream cheese and jam for a sweet variation.
