Rich chocolate sandwich cookies infused with fresh orange zest and filled with a bright, creamy orange buttercream for a perfectly balanced sweet treat.

Ingredients

For the chocolate cookies:

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

For the orange cream filling:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 12 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter with granulated sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and orange zest.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Scoop small portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheets and gently flatten.
  7. Bake for 8–10 minutes. Allow cookies to cool completely.
  8. For the filling, beat softened butter until smooth, then gradually mix in powdered sugar.
  9. Add orange zest, orange juice (gradually), and vanilla extract. Beat until creamy and spreadable.
  10. Spread or pipe filling onto the flat side of one cookie and sandwich with another cookie.

Notes

  • Chill the dough for 20–30 minutes if it feels too soft before baking.
  • Dip half of each sandwich cookie in melted dark chocolate for extra richness.
  • Add a small splash of orange extract for stronger citrus flavor.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze unfilled cookies for up to 2 months and assemble after thawing.
