Delicious French Dip Squares are a handheld twist on the classic sandwich, made with crescent roll dough layered with roast beef and melty cheese, baked to golden perfection, and served with a savory au jus dipping sauce. Perfect for parties, dinners, or game day snacks.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans crescent roll dough
  • 1 lb deli-style roast beef, thinly sliced
  • 810 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried parsley (optional)
  • 1 egg + 1 tbsp water, for egg wash (optional)
  • For the au jus dipping sauce:
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Roll out one can of crescent dough and press into the bottom of the dish, sealing seams.
  3. Layer roast beef evenly over the dough, then top with cheese slices.
  4. Roll out the second can of crescent dough and lay over the top, sealing seams.
  5. Brush with melted butter, sprinkle with garlic powder and parsley, and optionally brush with egg wash.
  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
  7. Meanwhile, make the au jus: simmer beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce (if using), garlic, onion powder, salt, and pepper for 5–7 minutes.
  8. Let baked squares cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving with warm au jus.

Notes

  • Swap in mozzarella or cheddar for different flavor profiles.
  • Add sautéed onions between layers for extra richness.
  • Spread Dijon mustard or horseradish on dough for a spicy kick.
  • Use puff pastry instead of crescent dough for a flakier crust.
  • Top with Italian-seasoned butter for added flavor.
