These French Onion Meatballs combine juicy beef meatballs with a rich, caramelized onion gravy, topped with melted Gruyère cheese. Inspired by French onion soup, this dish is hearty, flavorful, and perfect for cozy dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme
  • 1 cup Gruyère or Swiss cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  3. Form into 1½-inch meatballs and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 15–20 minutes, until browned and cooked through.
  5. Meanwhile, melt butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  6. Add sliced onions and cook for about 20 minutes until caramelized.
  7. Sprinkle flour over the onions, stir, and cook for 2 minutes.
  8. Gradually stir in beef broth, creating a smooth sauce.
  9. Add thyme, salt, and pepper to taste.
  10. Add baked meatballs to the sauce and simmer for 5 minutes.
  11. Top with shredded Gruyère cheese and let melt before serving.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey or chicken.
  • Add a splash of red wine to the sauce for extra depth.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, noodles, rice, or crusty bread.
  • To make gluten-free, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and cornstarch instead of flour.
