A comforting one-pot meal made with tender orzo, savory ground beef, and a creamy tomato sauce. Perfect for a quick, satisfying dinner that’s easy to prepare and loved by all ages.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup orzo pasta
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving)
  • Fresh basil or parsley (optional, for garnish)
  • 2 cups water or broth

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add diced onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes until soft. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  3. Add ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  5. Add uncooked orzo and 2 cups of water or broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 10–12 minutes until orzo is tender.
  6. Stir in the cream and simmer for a few more minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve hot with Parmesan and fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

  • Use crushed tomatoes for a chunky texture or tomato sauce for a smoother finish.
  • Swap ground beef with ground turkey, sausage, or plant-based alternatives for variety.
  • Add spinach or zucchini for extra veggies.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat with a splash of cream or water to loosen the sauce.
