Quick and easy Homemade Hush Puppies made with Jiffy cornbread mix and grated onion, fried to golden perfection. Crisp outside, soft inside—perfect as a Southern-style side dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 box Jiffy cornbread mix (8.5 oz)
  • ½ cup grated onion (about half a medium onion)
  • ⅓ cup milk or water (enough to form a thick batter)
  • Optional: pinch of salt, black pepper, garlic powder, or chopped scallions
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep skillet or saucepan over medium-high heat to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix Jiffy cornbread mix and grated onion.
  3. Gradually stir in milk or water until a thick, scoopable batter forms.
  4. Mix in any optional seasonings or add-ins if desired.
  5. Drop heaping teaspoons of batter into the hot oil, a few at a time.
  6. Fry for 2–3 minutes per side, turning until golden brown.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve hot with honey butter, tartar sauce, or remoulade.

Notes

  • Add shredded cheddar cheese for extra richness.
  • Minced jalapeños or cayenne spice them up.
  • Green onions add a pop of color and flavor.
  • Sweeten with a drizzle of honey for a twist.
