Mashed potatoes with parmesan are a creamy, cheesy twist on the classic comfort food. Rich, fluffy potatoes blended with buttery goodness and nutty parmesan make this side dish a flavorful favorite for weeknight dinners or holiday feasts.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Yukon gold or russet potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1 tablespoon salt (for boiling water)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup whole milk or heavy cream, warmed
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese (preferably freshly grated)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: 1 clove garlic (minced or roasted), chopped chives, extra melted butter for garnish

Instructions

  1. Place chopped potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add salt. Bring to a boil and cook until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes.
  2. Drain well and return potatoes to the hot pot to evaporate excess moisture.
  3. Mash the potatoes with butter and warm milk or cream until smooth and creamy.
  4. Stir in parmesan cheese until fully melted and incorporated.
  5. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  6. Serve hot, optionally topped with more parmesan, melted butter, or chopped chives.

Notes

  • Use freshly grated parmesan for best flavor and texture.
  • Roasted garlic, sour cream, or cream cheese can be added for extra richness.
  • Chopped herbs like parsley or chives add color and freshness.
  • To make it ahead, keep warm in a slow cooker on low or reheat with added milk or cream.
  • Dairy-free versions work with plant-based butter, milk, and cheese alternatives.
