Melted cheese Tennessee onions with a buttery golden crust is a comforting side dish featuring sweet onions baked in butter and topped with a rich blend of cheeses and seasonings. It’s savory, tender, and perfectly golden with every bite.

Ingredients

  • 34 sweet onions (Vidalia or similar), peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch thick rings
  • 4 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning or dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • Optional: 1/4 cup crushed crackers or panko breadcrumbs for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Slice onions into thick rings and separate them into individual rings.
  3. Arrange onion rings in the baking dish in a snug single layer.
  4. Drizzle melted butter over the onions and sprinkle with garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  5. Top evenly with mozzarella, cheddar, and parmesan cheese.
  6. Optionally, sprinkle crushed crackers or breadcrumbs over the cheese for extra crunch.
  7. Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes, until onions are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
  8. Let rest for a few minutes before serving to allow layers to set.

Notes

  • Use Gruyère or pepper jack cheese for variety.
  • Add smoked paprika or red pepper flakes for spice.
  • Double the recipe for larger gatherings using a bigger casserole dish.
  • For a meatier option, add crumbled cooked sausage before the cheese layer.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven for best texture.
