Pretzel Chicken with Mustard-Cheddar Sauce is a crispy, cheesy, pub-style dish featuring juicy chicken coated in crushed pretzels and served with a rich cheddar-mustard sauce. It’s a comforting, crowd-pleasing recipe that’s easy to make at home.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or tenders
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups crushed salted pretzels
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Olive oil or cooking spray (for baking or air frying)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (for roux)
  • 1 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (or air fryer to 400°F). Line a baking sheet or prep air fryer basket.
  2. Set up three bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with crushed pretzels mixed with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Dip each chicken piece in flour, then egg, then coat with pretzel mixture, pressing to adhere.
  4. Place chicken on baking sheet or in air fryer basket. Spray lightly with oil.
  5. Bake or air fry for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and fully cooked.
  6. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
  7. Gradually whisk in milk and simmer until thickened.
  8. Add shredded cheddar and Dijon mustard, stirring until melted and smooth. Add yellow mustard if desired, and season with salt and pepper.
  9. Keep sauce warm on low heat. Serve chicken with mustard-cheddar sauce on the side or drizzled on top.

Notes

  • Use chicken thighs instead of breasts for a juicier option—adjust cook time as needed.
  • Add cayenne or red pepper flakes to pretzel mix for extra heat.
  • Use different cheeses like Gruyère or pepper jack for sauce variety.
  • Crush pretzels with a rolling pin or food processor for your preferred texture.
  • Serve chicken in sandwiches or wraps for a fun twist.
