Smothered Hamburger Steaks Magic is a cozy, old-fashioned comfort food recipe featuring juicy beef patties simmered in a rich onion gravy until tender and flavorful.

Ingredients

  • For the Hamburger Steaks:
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup minced onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter (for cooking)
  • For the Onion Gravy:
  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, minced onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix just until combined, then shape into oval patties.
  2. Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook until soft and golden.
  4. Sprinkle in flour and stir to coat onions. Cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  5. Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until thickened into gravy.
  6. Return patties to skillet, reduce heat to low, and simmer in the gravy for 10–15 minutes until cooked through and tender.
  7. Serve hot with plenty of onion gravy spooned over the top.

Notes

  • Use ground turkey instead of beef for a lighter option.
  • Add a splash of red wine to the gravy for extra richness.
  • Include mushrooms with the onions for a mushroom-onion gravy.
  • Use seasoned Italian breadcrumbs for more flavor.
  • Serve over cauliflower mash for a lighter version.
