Smothered Turkey Wings are a classic soul food dish featuring tender, slow-baked turkey wings covered in a rich, savory homemade gravy. Perfect for hearty dinners and family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 46 turkey wings (whole or separated at the joint)
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced (optional)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 stalks celery, sliced (optional)
  • 2 cups chicken broth or stock (plus more for gravy)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or butter
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Pat turkey wings dry and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and thyme.
  3. Place seasoned wings in a baking dish with sliced onion, garlic, bell pepper, and celery if using.
  4. Pour chicken broth into the dish until it comes about halfway up the wings. Add Worcestershire sauce if desired.
  5. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 2 hours until the wings are tender.
  6. While baking, make the gravy: whisk flour and oil or butter in a skillet to create a light brown roux.
  7. Gradually whisk in warm chicken broth until smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and any extra spices.
  8. Remove turkey wings from oven, pour gravy over them, and return to oven uncovered for 20–30 minutes.

Notes

  • Brown turkey wings in a skillet before baking for more depth of flavor.
  • Substitute turkey drumsticks or thighs if wings are unavailable.
  • Add mushrooms or a splash of cream for richer gravy.
  • Use cayenne or hot sauce for a spicier version.
  • Can be adapted for a slow cooker method.
