Spaghetti Bolognese is a classic comfort dish made with a rich tomato and meat sauce simmered to perfection. Tossed with tender spaghetti, it’s hearty, flavorful, and perfect for family meals.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely diced
  • 1 celery stalk, finely diced
  • 1 can (14 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • ½ cup beef broth or water
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 ounces spaghetti

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add onion, carrot, and celery, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  3. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  4. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 1 minute.
  5. Add crushed tomatoes, beef broth, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Stir well, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Meanwhile, cook spaghetti in salted boiling water according to package instructions. Drain.
  7. Toss the spaghetti with the sauce or serve the sauce over the pasta. Garnish with fresh basil or Parmesan if desired.

Notes

  • To make the sauce smoother, add a splash of milk or cream during the last 5 minutes of simmering.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or plant-based meat for the beef.
  • This sauce freezes well—make a double batch for future meals!
