Spicy Nashville-Style Chicken Hoagies are fiery, crispy sandwiches made with juicy fried chicken brushed in cayenne-infused oil, topped with cool slaw and pickles in a soft hoagie roll. They’re bold, crunchy, and totally irresistible—Southern heat meets hoagie comfort.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp hot sauce
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • Oil for frying
  • 2 tbsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • 3 tbsp hot frying oil (from skillet)
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub buns
  • ½ cup dill pickle slices
  • 1½ cups coleslaw (creamy or vinegar-based)
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise or spicy mayo (optional)

Instructions

  1. Marinate chicken in buttermilk and hot sauce for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika.
  3. Heat oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Remove chicken from marinade and dredge in flour mixture, pressing to coat.
  5. Fry chicken for 5–6 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Drain on a wire rack.
  6. In a heatproof bowl, mix cayenne, brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, and chili powder. Stir in hot frying oil to make the spicy paste.
  7. Brush spicy oil generously over fried chicken while hot.
  8. Lightly toast hoagie rolls and spread with mayo or spicy mayo if using.
  9. Layer each roll with pickles, hot chicken, and a scoop of slaw.
  10. Serve immediately and enjoy.

  • Use chicken tenders for sliders or mini hoagies.
  • For a lighter version, bake chicken at 425°F or air fry at 400°F until crispy.
  • Pre-made slaw saves time and works perfectly.
