Swirled Garlic Herb and Cheese Bread is a soft, savory loaf rolled with buttery garlic, herbs, and melty cheese. Baked to golden perfection, it’s a flavorful and impressive bread perfect as a snack, side, or centerpiece.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup warm water or milk (110°F/45°C)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter (plus more for brushing)
  • 23 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, or blend)
  • 12 tbsp chopped fresh herbs or 1 tsp dried (parsley, oregano, thyme, basil)
  • 1 egg (optional, for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm water or milk with sugar and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in olive oil, salt, and flour. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1½ hours or until doubled.
  5. Mix minced garlic, herbs, a pinch of salt, and a bit of olive oil or softened butter for the filling.
  6. Roll dough into a rectangle (about 9×13 inches). Spread garlic-herb mixture evenly and sprinkle with cheese.
  7. Roll tightly into a log and place into a greased loaf pan or shape free-form. Let rise for 30–45 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush loaf with egg wash if using.
  9. Bake for 30–35 minutes, until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Let cool slightly before slicing to reveal swirls.

Notes

  • Try different cheeses like gouda, parmesan, or pepper jack.
  • Add-ins like spinach, caramelized onions, or sun-dried tomatoes work well.
  • Use store-bought dough for a shortcut.
  • For extra flavor, sprinkle red pepper flakes into the filling.
