Ingredients

  • 3 to 4 Vidalia sweet onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 8 pats
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 cup shredded Italian cheese blend (mozzarella, provolone, romano, asiago, Parmesan)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
  2. Arrange onion slices in a single layer in the baking dish.
  3. Season onions with salt, garlic powder, and oregano.
  4. Distribute butter pats evenly over the onions.
  5. Layer Italian cheese blend, cheddar, and Parmesan cheese on top.
  6. Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, until onions are tender and cheese is golden and bubbly.
  7. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

  • Add smoked paprika or crushed red pepper for a spicier version.
  • Layer in cooked bacon for a meatier dish.
  • Swap half the cheese for herbed breadcrumbs for a lighter alternative.
  • Serve over rice or pair with a salad as a vegetarian main.
  • Assemble up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate until ready to bake.
