  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract or anise extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon or orange zest

For the glaze:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice or almond extract
  • Sprinkles (optional, for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add milk, almond extract, and citrus zest.
  5. Gradually mix in dry ingredients until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
  6. Shape into small balls or knots and place on prepared baking sheets.
  7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, until bottoms are lightly golden and tops remain pale.
  8. In a small bowl, whisk powdered sugar, milk, and lemon juice or extract to make glaze.
  9. Dip warm cookies into glaze, let excess drip off, and top with sprinkles.
  10. Let cookies set completely before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Use anise extract for a stronger traditional flavor.
  • Color glaze for festive occasions.
  • Cookies freeze well unglazed — add icing after thawing.
  • Shape into braids or rings for special celebrations.
  • Best enjoyed with coffee or tea at room temperature.
