Yogurt marinated chicken is a juicy, flavorful dish where chicken is soaked in a spiced yogurt marinade and then grilled, baked, or seared to perfection. The yogurt tenderizes the meat while locking in rich, aromatic flavors.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs chicken pieces (breasts, thighs, or drumsticks)
  • 1 cup plain yogurt (Greek yogurt preferred)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together yogurt, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, cayenne (if using), salt, and black pepper.
  2. Add chicken pieces to the marinade, coating well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  3. Preheat grill, oven (to 400°F), or skillet when ready to cook.
  4. Remove chicken from marinade and cook until golden and fully cooked through—about 6–8 minutes per side on the grill or 30–35 minutes in the oven.
  5. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

  • Add grated ginger to the marinade for extra flavor.
  • Use boneless thighs for faster grilling.
  • Reserve some marinade (before adding raw chicken) to use as a drizzle.
  • Serve with naan, rice, or roasted vegetables.
  • Freezes well without marinade for up to 2 months.
