This Gluten Free Sloppy Joes recipe offers a flavorful twist on the classic comfort food, using gluten free burger buns and a hearty mixture of ground beef, vegetables, and a rich tomato paste-based sauce. Perfect for a quick, satisfying family meal in just 35 minutes.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 6-ounce can tomato paste (not sauce!)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 3/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 gluten free burger buns (recommended: Trader Joe’s)

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter. Allow it to fully melt before proceeding.
  2. Sauté Ground Beef: Add 1 pound of ground beef to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef begins to brown on all sides but is not fully cooked through yet.
  3. Sauté Vegetables: Add the diced half green bell pepper and diced small yellow onion to the beef. Cook for 4-5 minutes until softened. Stir in 1 tablespoon minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1 minute to release flavors.
  4. Add Tomato Paste: Stir in the entire 6-ounce can of tomato paste. Cook for 2-3 minutes to toast the paste, which deepens its flavor and enhances the sauce.
  5. Simmer and Season: Add 1/2 cup water, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 3/4 teaspoon chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper to the skillet. Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for about 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Serve: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto 4 gluten free burger buns and serve warm for a delicious meal.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to taste.
  • Make sure to use tomato paste, not tomato sauce, for a thicker and richer texture.
  • Brown sugar can be adjusted based on your sweetness preference.
  • If you prefer, you can substitute ground turkey or chicken for the beef.
  • Serve with a side of coleslaw or gluten free chips for a complete meal.
