Caprese Salad is a classic Italian dish that highlights the simple, fresh flavors of ripe tomatoes, creamy fresh mozzarella, and fragrant basil leaves, all drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and a touch of balsamic glaze. Perfect as a light appetizer or side salad, this easy recipe comes together quickly and celebrates the essence of summer produce.

Ingredients

Salad Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ripe tomatoes (3-4 medium), sliced 1/4” thick
  • 12-16 oz fresh mozzarella, sliced 1/4” thick
  • 1 bunch fresh basil (about 1/3 cup basil leaves)

Seasoning & Dressing

  • 3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper, or to taste
  • 2 Tbsp balsamic glaze, or added to taste (optional)

Instructions

  1. Layer Ingredients: Start by arranging slices of ripe tomatoes evenly on a large serving platter. Alternate by tucking slices of fresh mozzarella cheese between each tomato slice, ensuring both ingredients remain visible.
  2. Add Basil: Tuck whole fresh basil leaves between the layers of tomato and mozzarella to infuse the salad with aromatic flavor and color contrast.
  3. Season & Dress: Just before serving, generously season the entire layered salad with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Drizzle extra virgin olive oil evenly over the top.
  4. Finish with Balsamic Glaze: Optionally, drizzle 2 tablespoons of balsamic glaze over the salad to add a touch of sweetness and tanginess. Adjust quantity according to your preference.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, use ripe, in-season tomatoes and high-quality fresh mozzarella.
  • Basil leaves should be fresh; avoid bruised or wilted leaves for best presentation and taste.
  • Balsamic glaze is optional but adds a beautiful finishing touch; you can make your own by reducing balsamic vinegar with a bit of sugar until thickened.
  • This salad is best served immediately to preserve the freshness of ingredients.
  • Can be served as an appetizer or a light side dish for 6 people.
