This Classic Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp is a warm, comforting dessert featuring tender, spiced Granny Smith apples baked under a crunchy oat and brown sugar topping. Perfect for cozy evenings, this easy-to-make apple crisp combines tart apples with a buttery, cinnamon-scented topping, optionally enhanced with chopped nuts for extra texture.

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 medium Granny Smith apples (or mix with Honeycrisp or Fuji)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp cornstarch

For the Crisp Topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Oven and Apples: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Peel, core, and slice the apples into ¼-inch thick wedges. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch until the apples are evenly coated. Spread this apple mixture evenly in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Make the Crisp Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to break the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. If desired, stir in the chopped pecans or walnuts for added crunch.
  3. Assemble and Bake: Sprinkle the prepared topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping turns golden brown and the apple filling bubbles around the edges. Remove from oven and allow the apple crisp to cool for 10 to 15 minutes to let the filling thicken before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mix of Granny Smith and sweeter apples like Honeycrisp or Fuji for balanced flavor.
  • Chilling the butter before incorporating it into the topping ensures a crisp texture.
  • For extra flavor, serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • The crisp can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
