Perfect for an easy yet flavorful weeknight dinner, it offers a delightful balance of textures and a comforting taste that pairs well with various sides.

Ingredients

Chicken and Seasoning

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Cooking and Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese, divided (½ cup for sauce, ½ cup for topping)
  • 4 slices cooked ham
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken: Pat the chicken breasts dry using paper towels. Season both sides with salt, pepper, and a pinch of garlic powder for added flavor. Lightly coat the chicken breasts with flour to help the sauce adhere later.
  2. Cook the chicken: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the chicken breasts on each side for 4-5 minutes until golden and the internal temperature reaches 160°F. The outside should be crisp but not burnt. Remove chicken from skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the sauce: In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir in the heavy cream and ½ cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese. Stir continuously until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
  4. Assemble and bake: Place the browned chicken breasts in a baking dish. Top each breast with one slice of cooked ham, then sprinkle the remaining ½ cup Monterey Jack cheese evenly over all. Pour the prepared cream sauce evenly over the chicken. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  5. Rest and serve: Remove the dish from the oven and let the chicken rest for 5 minutes to seal in the juices. Garnish with chopped parsley. Serve immediately with your favorite sides such as roasted vegetables or garlic mashed potatoes.

Notes

  • Use fresh Monterey Jack cheese for the best melting quality and flavor.
  • Do not skip the browning step as it adds important texture and flavor depth.
  • Adjust sauce thickness by adding more cream if too thick or a small amount of flour slurry if too thin.
  • Fresh garlic in the sauce enhances aroma more than garlic powder.
  • This dish can be adapted for air frying after browning the chicken, cooking at 375°F for 8-10 minutes until cheese melts.
