Crispy and flavorful Chicken Popcorn is a delicious appetizer made from bite-sized chicken breast pieces coated in a seasoned flour mixture and fried to golden perfection. Served hot with your favorite dipping sauce, this easy-to-make treat is perfect for parties, snacks, or a fun meal.

Ingredients

For the Chicken:

  • 1 lb (about 450g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for spice)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)

For the Dipping Sauce (Optional):

  • Ranch dressing or your favorite dipping sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Cut the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces, approximately 1-inch cubes to ensure even cooking and easy eating.
  2. Set Up the Breading Station: In a shallow bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and optional cayenne pepper. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until fully combined.
  3. Bread the Chicken: Dip each chicken piece first into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off, then dredge it thoroughly in the flour mixture, making sure each piece is evenly coated. Arrange the breaded chicken on a plate.
  4. Heat the Oil: Pour about ½ inch of oil into a large skillet or deep fryer and heat it over medium-high heat until it reaches around 350°F (175°C), ideal for frying.
  5. Fry the Chicken: Carefully place the breaded chicken pieces into the hot oil in batches, avoiding overcrowding. Fry each side for about 4-5 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  6. Serve: Serve the hot, crispy chicken popcorn with your preferred dipping sauce such as ranch or barbecue sauce for a tasty snack or appetizer.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil temperature stays steady around 350°F for best frying results.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan to allow even cooking and proper crispiness.
  • Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper according to your preferred spice level.
  • Use a thermometer to accurately gauge oil temperature if possible.
  • For a healthier option, consider baking or air frying but expect a different texture.
