Perfect as a flavorful, savory dip for chips, veggies, or crackers, this recipe brings rich, sweet onion flavor and creamy texture together for an irresistible snack or party appetizer.

Ingredients

Caramelized Onions

  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil or cooking oil
  • 2-3 medium-large onions (about 3 cups), sliced into half moons
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 cup water (for deglazing and as needed)
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (additional)

Dip Base

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped

Optional Garnish

  • Everything bagel seasoning for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oil and Start Cooking Onions: Heat 2 tablespoons of avocado or cooking oil over high heat in a large skillet. Add the sliced onions and 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, then cook for 5 minutes to begin the caramelization process.
  2. Slowly Caramelize the Onions: Reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking the onions for 45-50 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking or burning. Add small amounts of water as needed to deglaze and keep the onions moist for even caramelization.
  3. Add Garlic: In the last 1-2 minutes of cooking, add the minced garlic to the onions and stir to combine, allowing the garlic to soften and flavor the mixture without burning.
  4. Deglaze and Cool: Remove the skillet from heat, add 1/2 cup water to deglaze the pan, scraping up all the browned bits. Let the mixture cool for 10-15 minutes to room temperature.
  5. Combine with Dip Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine most of the caramelized onions (reserving a few tablespoons for garnish) with sour cream, Greek yogurt, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, coarse black pepper, chopped parsley, chopped chives, and an additional 1/4 teaspoon sea salt. Mix thoroughly until well blended.
  6. Chill or Serve: Chill the dip in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours to thicken and let flavors meld or serve immediately. Before serving, top with reserved caramelized onions and optionally sprinkle everything bagel seasoning for extra flavor and texture.

Notes

  • This recipe requires patience as caramelizing onions takes time, but the rich flavor is worth the wait.
  • The dip tastes even better after a day resting in the fridge, allowing flavors to deepen.
  • For a lighter version, you can use all Greek yogurt instead of sour cream.
  • Maintain medium heat during caramelization to prevent burning and achieve best flavor.
  • The dip will keep well for up to 5 days stored in the refrigerator.
