A creamy and spicy Cajun Shrimp Mac and Cheese that adds a flavorful twist to the classic comfort dish. Featuring tender shrimp seasoned with Cajun spices, melted sharp cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, all combined with perfectly cooked elbow macaroni for a hearty, satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Pasta

  • 8 ounces elbow macaroni

Shrimp and Seasoning

  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning

Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Garnish

  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta. Bring salted water to a boil and cook the elbow macaroni until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Season the shrimp. Toss the peeled and deveined shrimp with Cajun seasoning evenly. Set aside to marinate briefly.
  3. Make the roux. In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Whisk in the all-purpose flour to create a smooth roux and cook for about 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  4. Add milk and thicken sauce. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking continuously, cooking until the sauce thickens and smooths, about 4-5 minutes.
  5. Melt the cheeses. Stir in the shredded sharp cheddar and mozzarella cheeses into the sauce until fully melted and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Cook the shrimp. Add the seasoned shrimp to the skillet with the cheese sauce and cook until the shrimp turn pink and opaque, approximately 3-4 minutes.
  7. Combine pasta and sauce. Mix the drained elbow macaroni with the shrimp and cheese sauce in the skillet to combine thoroughly.
  8. Serve. Plate the Cajun shrimp mac and cheese immediately. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired for an added touch of color and freshness.

Notes

  • This dish is best served immediately while hot to enjoy the creamy texture.
  • Leftovers can be reheated gently but may lose some creaminess over time.
  • For a gluten-free option, substitute regular elbow macaroni with gluten-free pasta.
