Ingredients

Roasted Figs

  • 8 oz fresh figs (about 9 figs), halved or left whole if small
  • 2 tablespoon balsamic vinegar, plus more for drizzling
  • 2 tablespoon orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier)
  • 2 tablespoon honey, plus more for drizzling

Butter Board Base

  • ½ cup (1 stick or 4 ounces) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoon fresh rosemary, divided, plus more for topping
  • ½ teaspoon orange zest
  • Flaky sea salt, to taste

To Serve

  • Crackers or toasted bread

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) to prepare the figs for roasting.
  2. Prepare Figs: In a baking dish, arrange the fresh figs cut side up if halved. This helps them roast evenly and absorb the flavors.
  3. Add Liquids: Drizzle the balsamic vinegar, orange liqueur, and honey over the figs, ensuring they are evenly coated.
  4. Roast Figs Covered: Cover the baking dish with foil to retain moisture and roast for 15 minutes, softening the figs and infusing them with the sweet and tangy flavors.
  5. Finish Roasting Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue roasting the figs for another 5 minutes until they are soft but still hold their shape. Then remove from the oven and let them cool.
  6. Prepare Butter Base: In a bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter with 1 teaspoon of finely chopped fresh rosemary and the orange zest. Mix until well incorporated.
  7. Assemble Butter Board: Spread the rosemary-orange butter evenly across a serving board or plate to create a smooth base layer.
  8. Add Figs and Garnish: Arrange the roasted figs over the butter spread. Drizzle additional honey and balsamic vinegar over the top. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and the remaining fresh rosemary for garnish.
  9. Serve: Serve immediately with crackers or toasted bread for guests to spread and enjoy.

Notes

  • Roasting the figs caramelizes their natural sugars, enhancing their sweetness and flavor complexity.
  • Using softened butter makes it easier to spread smoothly over the serving board.
  • Adjust the honey and balsamic drizzle to your taste preference for sweetness or tanginess.
  • Fresh rosemary adds an aromatic, earthy note but can be substituted with thyme for a different herbal twist.
  • Serve this butter board at room temperature to allow the butter to remain soft and spreadable.
  • This recipe can be scaled up for larger gatherings by increasing ingredient amounts accordingly.
