These delicious roasted turnips are a simple and flavorful side dish, perfectly seasoned with olive oil, sea salt, paprika, black pepper, and garlic powder. Roasting brings out their natural sweetness and a delightful savory taste, making them an excellent accompaniment to a variety of meals.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds turnips
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Optional: chopped herbs like parsley or oregano

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure it’s hot and ready for roasting the turnips.
  2. Prepare Turnips: Using a sharp knife, slice off the tops and bases of the turnips, then chop them into ½ inch pieces for even cooking.
  3. Season Turnips: Place the diced turnips on a parchment- or aluminum foil-lined sheet pan. Drizzle with olive oil, then sprinkle with sea salt, paprika, ground black pepper, and garlic powder. Toss everything together until the turnips are evenly coated with the oil and spices.
  4. Arrange for Roasting: Spread the seasoned turnips out in a single layer on the baking sheet, leaving a little space between each piece to allow for even roasting and slight caramelization.
  5. Roast: Roast the turnips in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, until they are tender on the inside and slightly caramelized on the edges. Optionally, garnish with chopped herbs like parsley or oregano before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh, firm turnips for the best texture and flavor.
  • Roasting time may vary slightly depending on your oven and the size of the turnip pieces; test tenderness with a fork.
  • For extra flavor, sprinkle fresh herbs on top after roasting.
  • Turnips can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To keep turnips crisp, avoid overcrowding the pan when roasting.
