Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) instant yeast

Wet Ingredients & Flavorings

  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped
  • Extra flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. Gather Ingredients: Prepare and measure all ingredients to ensure a smooth baking process.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, sugar, and instant yeast thoroughly.
  3. Create Dough Base: Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the warm water and olive oil. Mix until a shaggy dough begins to form.
  4. Knead Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. First Rise: Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it, and allow it to rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours until it doubles in size.
  6. Prepare Herb Mixture: Combine minced garlic, chopped rosemary, and chopped thyme in a small bowl to infuse flavor into the bread.
  7. Incorporate Herbs: Punch down the risen dough to release air, flatten it slightly, sprinkle the garlic-herb mixture over it, then fold and shape the dough into a loaf.
  8. Second Rise: Place the shaped dough on parchment paper and let it rise for another 30 minutes while preheating the oven to 450°F (232°C).
  9. Bake Covered: Place the dough inside a preheated Dutch oven, cover it, and bake for 30 minutes to create steam that results in a crispy crust.
  10. Bake Uncovered: Remove the Dutch oven lid and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the bread is golden brown and fully baked through.
  11. Cool: Transfer the bread to a wire rack and let it cool for 15 minutes before slicing, allowing the crumb to set perfectly.

Notes

  • Ensure your yeast is fresh and active for the best rise and texture.
  • Allow the bread to cool completely before slicing to maintain the soft crumb structure and improve flavor.
